SMI calculator 2026: check what your payslip looks like after taxes if you earn the legal
What is the SMI in 2026 and how this article helps you
The 2026 Spanish statutory minimum wage (SMI) was set in the Official State Gazette (BOE) and for payroll purposes it is: 1,221 EUR per month in 14 payments, which equals 17,094 EUR per year (SMI 2026 — BOE). This article explains how to translate that gross SMI into the figures that appear on your payslip (gross per pay, annual gross) and what you need to check to estimate your net pay using our calculator.
We do not replace official tax or social security calculations. The simulation provided by our calculator is informative: compare any withholding result with the Agencia Tributaria (AEAT) official guidance and your payroll department.
Quick arithmetic: gross per pay under different payment systems
- Official SMI 2026: 1,221 EUR per month in 14 payments.
- Annual gross (14 payments): 1,221 × 14 = 17,094 EUR per year.
- If your employer instead spreads the same annual amount over 12 monthly payments, the equivalent gross monthly pay is 17,094 ÷ 12 = 1,424.50 EUR per month.
These simple conversions are important because Spanish contracts and payslips may show either the per-pay figure (for 14 pays) or a monthly gross for a 12-pay arrangement. Make sure you know which scheme your contract uses when you use a net-salary calculator.
Deductions to expect on an SMI payslip (Spain-focused)
On a standard payroll the two main groups of deductions that reduce gross pay to the net that you receive are:
- Social Security contributions (employee share). These include contributions for common contingencies, unemployment, professional training and other legally required items. The legal maximum contribution base for some components of Social Security in 2026 is 5,101.20 EUR per month — the SMI is well below that cap, so your contribution base is normally your actual SMI pay rather than the maximum base.
- Income tax withholding (IRPF). The amount of IRPF withheld each pay period depends on your personal situation (marital status, dependents, disability, other income, and region of residence) and on the official withholding tables and rules published by the Agencia Tributaria (AEAT).
Important: the article does not invent specific Social Security or IRPF percentage rates. Precise percentages and withholding tables are set by law and by the tax agency; see the official links below to obtain current, binding rates and tables.
Small but concrete calculation you can rely on
Some figures provided in official sources are fully numerical and can be used in a transparent calculation:
- Monthly SMI (14 pays): 1,221 EUR.
- Annual SMI (14 pays): 17,094 EUR.
- Equivalent monthly SMI if 12 pays: 1,424.50 EUR (17,094 ÷ 12).
- Employee MEI (as provided for 2026 in our inputs): 0.15% (this is one specific employer/employee concept included in the simulation model). Applied to the annual SMI, 0.15% × 17,094 = 25.64 EUR per year (approximately), or 1.83 EUR per 1,221-EUR pay (14 pays). This MEI component is only one of several Social Security items and therefore is not the only deduction.
Do not assume that the MEI number equals your total Social Security discount — it does not. Use it within the calculator as one known input and let the tool apply the other legally required contributions according to up-to-date official tables when possible.
Why many people on the SMI see little or no income-tax withholding
Because the SMI annual gross (17,094 EUR) is relatively low and the personal allowances and minimums in the Spanish IRPF system reduce taxable base for many taxpayers, many workers earning the SMI and without other income see very small or zero monthly IRPF withholdings. Whether you are required to have IRPF withheld depends on your whole fiscal situation (other income, family situation, deductions). Always check the AEAT guidance for withholding calculations.
How to use our SMI 2026 calculator (step-by-step)
- Select the gross amount and the pay frequency: choose 14 pays with 1,221 EUR per pay or enter the annual gross 17,094 EUR and pick 14 pays. For 12-pay contracts enter the annual figure and choose 12 pays to see the 1,424.50 EUR monthly result.
- Fill personal details that affect withholding: marital status, number of dependent children, shared custody, disability if applicable, and any other income. These inputs influence IRPF withholding estimates.
- Decide whether your contract includes salary-related items (meal vouchers, per diems, overtime) — include them as gross income if applicable.
- Review the Social Security section: our model includes the MEI 0.15% parameter and applies standard Social Security contribution concepts; for full accuracy compare with Seguridad Social publications.
- Run the simulation. The result is informative and helps you anticipate your net pay and the monthly IRPF retention that will appear on payslips.
Calculator note: this is an informative simulation. For the binding withholding and tax liability consult AEAT and your payroll department.
Practical tips to check your actual payroll
- Ask HR or your employer for a payslip example showing gross per pay, Social Security bases and the IRPF withholding code used. That code determines the withholding percentage applied by payroll software.
- If you have other income (second job, rental income, capital gains) your annual IRPF liability may require a different withholding strategy. Combine all income sources when estimating net pay.
- Region matters. Autonomous communities can affect final tax burdens via different regional tax schedules and deductions; check AEAT regional guidance.
